Before that, for 35 million years under the sea, it was slowly accumulating layers of marine sediment, the bedrock of the oldest soils . Alkaline soils can also decrease plant nutrient solubility, principally phosphorus, boron, copper, iron, manganese, and zinc. Often, the largest problem with alkaline soils is a high salt content. High salt content interferes with water uptake by many forage species and their photosynthetic rate.

    Lime in soils. Comparatively few humid soils contain limestone or CaCO,. Practically none is found in Western Oregon. The lime which most of these soils contain is already in combination with the complex soil minerals known as acid silicates. Last year, we took soil samples from 27 vegetable gardens in Corvallis and Portland, and tested for differences between garden sites based upon bed-type (e.g. raised beds versus in-ground beds).
